The log arrives, rolling off the trailer onto its carving cradle. April 10, 1983. |

Work begins, peeling the bark, and saving it for later use. |
First cuts with the long saw.

Shaping with an elbow adze. |
Finally Her face emerges. |

Starting to carve the other side. |

She is transformed. |
Carving complete, we load the pole onto a trailer, for the trip to its new home. |

Installation day, Sept 21, 1983. |
Setting the salmon on her hands. |

In place at last. |
Dedication day, Sept 24. Veiled in red cloth, adorned with cedar boughs and kelp. |

Under the watchful eyes of their advisors |
the carver and tribal chairman prepare for the ceremony. |

Samish families sing a song of welcome. |
The story pole is unveiled. |

Offerings of food are taken out into the channel to feed the Maiden's Spirit.
