GREEN MAN
The Green Man is a deity from the Old Religion of Europe and the British Isles. He is the embodiment of the Forest, and the verdant fertility of the Vegetable Kingdom. He is usually found in recent times as a gargoyle, or some other decorative carving on stone bridges, churches, and castles, as a reminder of the ancient traditions still respected in the old crafts like stone carving and masonry. He is always depicted with leaves growing out of his face, usually oak, and often smiling, sometimes leering, as if full of the joy of life.
This sculpture is of green alabaster from Arizona, about 15" x 12", and now hangs on the wall of some dear friends in Bellingham.
