SHE FLIES

This is a tiny little figure, and it is the result of a challenge by my good friend Meredith, who told me I needed to "lighten up" my sculptures.  Her advice was that to grow in my ability to speak through stone, I should move beyond the solid forms, with wide stable bottoms, that I had been carving up till then.   And sure enough, when I looked around, she was perfectly right.  I had been stuck in that traditional mode so eloquently stated by Michelangelo's famous statement that a good sculpture should be able to withstand a tumble down a mountainside.  So, this is the result, a marble sculpture with no visible means of support, full of air and light.  Scary!  It was a breakthrough for me, and I have always been grateful for it, as it made possible most of what I have carved since.
